High summer. The garden was parched,
the hosepipe banned,
the sky unpitying.
It took three men to move the stone aside.
The dark hole silenced us,
drew us together.
Leaning, we looked and saw
our own upturned faces,
a small bright circle of reflected sky,
the close-set stonework of the rounded wall.
We breathed the cool and mossy-smelling air
and knew the profound stillness
of that place between the worlds.
